Interesting Calgarian: Joal Kamps

By blending storytelling with songwriting, folk singer Joal Kamps creates what he likes to call “Rocky Mountain Folk Pop”. Before his music career started, Joal spent four years traveling around the world in hopes of finding himself and new adventure. During this time, Joal went from sleeping in a car for six weeks one harsh Canadian winter, to walking the runways of Milan’s fashion week, to building and installing BioSand water filters in impoverished areas in El Salvador, making his way from Asia to Europe to Central America. In the last five years Joal has been quite successful winning multiple awards for his songwriting and recorded work, including Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and Song of the Year for his first single ‘Take my World Apart’. He has also completed many tours across Western Canada and the United States, performing at festivals in the United Sates, Europe and Canada and signed a management deal and North American distribution agreement. You could say Joal was able to accomplish more than most bands accomplish in a decade within these 5 years!
Joal currently resides in Calgary, Alberta near the Rocky Mountains, where he is able to find inspiration for his folk music. At this time Joal is working on his forth album, scheduled to be released in spring of 2014. During his free time Joal likes to hike and recharge his creative spirit beneath the branches of a white spruce with his songbook and guitar. Joal continues to receive positive reviews from industries and critics all around. We look forward to hearing Joal’s new work in the new year and have no doubt that this album will be another successful one!
Favorite room in the house: The Living Room – The living room has got to be the best. You can always cut loose, relax, and come up with some great jams at night.
Favorite restaurant in Calgary: Any Pan-Asian place – I’m a really big fan of Pan-Asian foods and can’t really pick any one place… Standard Thai, Vietnamese, or Korean places are high on the list.
