5 ways to modernize your home at Home Depot this long weekend

27Jun12

Don’t have much on the go this weekend? Looking for a DIY project to modernize the look of your tired interior? Here are a few ideas for the intermediate do-it-yourselfer.

LIGHTING

Changing out some fixtures, adding some LED puck lights under cabinets or in clever places, or installing retro fit mini pots can have a huge impact on dark spaces. Make sure the switch is off prior to getting started!

PAINT

I know, I know, too much white! Trust me, paint those taupe and beige walls a crisp, clean white and the whole space will feel brand new.

TILE

Adding tile or retiling an entry or bathroom is certainly one of the more skilled  DIY projects. The secret to a quality tile install is patience, don’t be afraid to re cut a tile to get it just right. Buy the bag of tile spacers, they really work, and if it’s your first attempt, keep the grout lines a bit bigger, this will help.

CABINET PULLS

This has to be the easiest way to improve and change the look of your cabinetry, and the feel of your home. Most cabinet pulls will have standardized hole spacing, so find out the size you have, and replace that dated hardware with something new and improved.

MDF

This is my favourite! We love the unlimited uses for this product, whether you want to do a built-in desk, unique bookshelf or build some cabinets, this is the product. You will need a few more tools for this one, but what a perfect reason to add to your arsenal. With a small table saw, brad nailer and an orbital sander the sky is the limit. Couple of tips. 1) Use tons of wood glue! There can never be enough, this will keep the joints from cracking and ensure a long lasting product. 2) Wear a respirator…the whole time you are working! MDF dust in nasty stuff, filled with all sorts of toxins, don’t take any risks.
